The Resilient Bell Maker

It started with me unlocking the spray paint cage. I wanted to be a paint associate for a long time because I have a love for paint projects, and my curiosity rang as I dropped the Cage’s padlock into my work apron. “What are you working on?” Not a question I ask everyone, but for reasons unknown I felt compelled to ask. 

“I’m making a bell.”

“A bell!” I exclaimed.

“Yes, I am a welder and I make them out of old propane cylinders.”  I make these bells for my son’s teachers, every year since he was diagnosed with autism. It is part of a calming strategy and a de-escalation tactic for classroom melt downs. They have been so effective at calming the escalated child while safely clearing classrooms that I have started making them for other struggling children also. So that everyone gets to feel safe and understands what needs to happen when the bell rings.”.

I was honestly taken aback at how strongly this resonated with what my son and I have been struggling with for the past couple of years- with this school year being especially tough.

“My son has ASD” I told him. “He’s somewhat of a chair thrower. School has been really hard for him”. I said.

“Let me make a bell for your school!” He offered with no hesitation. “Please, take my card.” He handed me a business card with all his contact info. “Give that to your child’s school and let them know I will make them a bell for free. I also have other great resources for any teachers with struggling ASD students I will happily volunteer.”

I graciously took his card and thanked him for sharing such a wonderful concept.

The following week, as I was connecting with the school’s IEP staff for his monthly behavioral review, I presented that card. I went on to relay how effective it was in action and that it might be a good resource for them to try. I honestly felt like I was at my wits end while throwing this card their way.

The following month I was surprised that they thanked me for the resource and that he really did make them a bell and it turned out to be really helpful. The school, they said, was very appreciative of his work and kindness.

So in a way, this is a letter to “the bell maker”. I no longer have your card, nor do I recall your name. But I do recall how strongly you moved those around you with your positivity and determination. Without even seeing the bell, I would say it resonates more powerfully than any other I have heard.
